The Cortez Clam Factory, referred to as
“ The Clam “ by locals, is a friendly honkytonk located just a mile from the historic “Cortez Fishing Village“.
Originally known as Hunter's Point, Cortez used to be settled in the 1880's by way of households from Carteret County, North Carolina. When a post office set up in 1888, the village wanted a new identify to keep away from confusion with any other Hunter's Point in Florida. Although the origins of Cortez can't be formally proven, the neighborhood may have been named after the Spanish Conquistador Hernán Cortés.
